In-Practice Consultations

Performer-focused eye care and advanced testing at our Holmfirth clinic.

At Performing Arts Vision Care, we know that the demands of stage, studio, and production require more than a standard eye check. Our In-Practice performing arts visual health consultations offer the same award-winning expertise and personalised care as our At-Home service, but with the added benefit of access to our full suite of specialist equipment and in-clinic technology.

Trusted by the Performing Arts Community

We are proud to be registered practitioners with the British Association for Performing Arts Medicine (BAPAM)—the UK’s leading body for healthcare professionals supporting performers. Both our business and our specialist opticians—Abigayle Doe, Sheryl Doe, and Elizabeth Susan Holmes—are BAPAM registered. You can also find Performing Arts Vision Care listed as a BAPAM-registered business. This accreditation means you can trust that our care meets the highest standards for performer health and wellbeing.

What Makes Our In-Practice Consultations Unique?

Our consultations go far beyond a standard eye exam. We combine clinical expertise with cutting-edge technology and a deep understanding of the visual demands of performance. Every assessment is tailored to your specific role and environment, ensuring you receive recommendations that genuinely enhance your performance and comfort.

During your consultation, you’ll benefit from:

Saccadic Eye Tracking:
We track and record your eye movements as you sight-read and play, assessing binocular imbalance, ocular dominance, blink rate, and visual fatigue—providing invaluable insight into your visual behaviour during performance.

Visual Stress Analysis:
We evaluate for performance-induced visual stress and dry eye disorders, addressing issues that can impact your comfort and concentration on stage.

VR Visual Gaze Analysis:
Using advanced VR technology, we analyse your gaze dynamics in real performance scenarios, enabling us to design truly bespoke lenses and visual solutions.

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT):
As part of your consultation, we offer advanced optical coherence tomography (OCT) scanning. OCT is a non-invasive imaging technology that provides detailed cross-sectional images of the retina, allowing us to detect and monitor conditions such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, and other retinal issues at a very early stage. This high-resolution scan gives us a deeper understanding of your eye health, ensuring that any potential problems are identified and managed promptly—so you can continue to perform with clarity and confidence.

Binocular Visual Field Analysis & Esterman Visual Field Test:
Our 120-point binocular Esterman test—similar to the DVLA fields test—plots both your central and peripheral vision, checks for scotomas (blind spots), reduced fixation, and areas of reduced sensitivity. This comprehensive approach ensures no aspect of your vision is overlooked.

Additional Specialist Tests (as needed):

  • eScoop assessment for Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD)
  • Hess Screening for ocular motility disorders
  • Colorimetry for visual stress, migraine, and dyslexia

What to Expect During Your Visit

Performance-Based Assessment:
Instrumentalists will be asked to sight-read and play during the exam, allowing us to monitor your real-time visual function and tailor our recommendations to your actual performance conditions.

Working Distance Replication:
We replicate your measured working distances in the clinic, so your performance prescription(s) are calculated precisely for your needs.

Collaborative Consultation:
After your assessments, our Dispensing Optician will join you in the consultation suite to review findings and discuss your goals. Together, you’ll measure your performance and sight-reading fields using glasses or contact lenses, and discuss the specifics of your rehearsal venue or working environment.

Video Analysis:
We’ll video you playing and track your eye movements again, capturing every nuance to inform your custom lens design.

Tailored Optical Solutions:
Using all the gathered data, your optician will create an optical solution/lens design to correct your ocular disorder and maximise your visual performance.
